Whatever happened to skinmarket???
I remember once I went to NJ. I was about 16 years old and had not yet discovered the true art of makeup, yet was more into my grunge-y black boots and shagged-up haircut stage ( I looked like some sort of hipster lesbian lol). One of the first things that got me going in this was the Skinmarket store. The eyeshadows were gorgeous, and I looved all the face and hair products ( I remember having a strawberry face mask that needed to be refrigerated and a straightening balm for hair that I was still bumping into last year until, finally, I threw it out of its own misery). But what really made me the coolest girl in my high school back in Puerto Rico was their lip lava.
These were a super-shiny holographic ( YES, HOLOGRAPHIC) iridescent, magnificent, too-cool combination of colors that I got away with wearing at school because they only showed up when the light hit directly. I used to carry it in my blouse pocket and show it off to every girl in my class. They, of course, weren't past bonne bell lip smackers yet, let alone spend $12 on a tiny lipgloss just for the aesthetics of the packaging. True, this product tasted awful, and the package was tiny, and it didn't last long, but it gave me a status amongst all the other NYC-rollerball girls in my class. I loved it =)
I was sad, however, to discover that the stores misteriously disappeared, including the website. What do you think happened? Did any of you own any skinmarket products that you want to rant or rave about?

Post a CommentI can't say I've ever heard or remember a SkinMarket store. Sounds interesting, though.
hmmm, ive never heard of them.
OMG. I had a lip lava. It was called Belly-(something?). Maybe Bellyache? I dunno. It was amazing. The iridescence really did it for me. (This was around the time of my purple-lipstick phase, so good taste wasn't really a factor...) I also still have one of their eyeshadows - a matte lilac color called Fairy Godmother, which I love. SkinMarket was pretty amazing, but I think they've been out of business for several years now. Which is a shame, because it was a fun place.
I used to love their products. They had a store in my area but they closed it down.
SkinMarket was a teenagers dream because you could go to the mall and put on all the makeup you wanted! idk why they went out of business, but i didnt really love any of their products just that i could try them on and there were so many!
I can tell you what happened, since I worked there
Salesgirls were called "Sales
Mavens". I worked there for almost a year. Skinmarket went out of business because they opened too many stores too soon. There were 30 stores at the time that we closed up shop. There was too
much overhead and not enough income. So, corporate came in one day, completely unannounced, cleaned out our register, and locked the doors. That was it. My store was in Nashua, NH at the
Pheasant Lane mall. There was another store close to us in Massachusetts. The manager there called us to say that they had just been closed down by corporate, so our particular store did have a
heads up, by about a half an hour...we bought what we could before the corporate managers got there to shut the doors. I received my last paycheck in the mail two weeks later.
To bailaoragaditana: yes, your lip lava was called bellyache. I still have one sealed that I just refuse to open. It's too pretty to use!
My favorite product was the shimmies and sugar shimmies. Finely milled pigmented powder that you could put just anywhere. The Beauty Bar in the store was my favorite area. So many awesome, shocking colors to choose from! And the 40% discount wasn't bad, either.
To this day, I haven't found another job that I loved as much as working there. It was just the best, and I was so crushed that we closed.
Hope that answered your questions. If you have any others, let me know and I'll be sure to answer.
thanks! i only went there once but it was such a cool store, i was disappointed when i returned and didn't find it. whatever happened to all the products? what a waste. the eyeshadows were pretty good, and the face stuff that they kept refrigerated, yum!!!
I worked at skinmarket as a sales maven in valley fair mall in san jose, ca. I reguarly have dreams that skinmarket has opened again and all my co-workers have forgotten to tell me. It was a great job.
As a 14 yr old, I loved going to Skinmarket (the valley fair one too!). My friend was gonna have her 15th birthday at Skinmarket with those face masks that looked like ice cream. My twin sister and i didn't have a job, so whenever we shopped, it was more to look, try on things and have fun. We did split the cost for this Pineapple Scrub that i wanted to eat everytime i opened it. Fun times, i miss it!
oh my god. I loved skinmarket. I think my mom bought my skinmakret stuff at Kohl's the department store. I love their Pomegranite Body Lotion, its smells so pretty. I still have an unsealed bottle that i dont want to open because i know i will never get it again!!!!
WOW!! I have 3 color pigment vials left from SkinMarket!! I loved them.. I still to this day use this color that is pinkish blue! But I am almost out of it and I couldn't remember the name of the store because the label rubbed off!! The only reason I figured it out was because of a vial that I lost and just came across the other day. Still can't find that color or anything like it.
very sad...
I worked at Skinmarket, my very first job! They closed when I worked for them because one of the investors was accused of bad business deals and money laundering. The feds actually seized all the stores as property. I miss it dearly and wish it would come back. It was a great first job when I was 16!!
Also the guy who owned it was a record producer & lived by me in Santa Barbara. We would win trips to his home for sales goals. He was arrested as well.. Its sad it was my favorite job just like everyone else. I loved the oils you could pick for you lotion and how they had blenders built into the back wall to create lotions and body wash. I miss it way too much!!
I still have my skinmarket t-shirts that say "Best Friend" and "Lush"..
I miss that store. It had the perfect dark purple gloss that came out a pretty purple color. I still have my lip lava (spice and sugar), although it's just about gone. I used to shop at the one in the rockingham mall all the time. Does anyone know if you can still find sealed skin market cosmetics?
Maybe it was the store in pheasant lane mall, not rockingham.
This was a video for one of Skinmarket's in-store events in Colorado

I loved a body spray that they used to sell. I think it was called "ocean flower". It was blue in a glass bottle. I love, love, love that spray. It smells like you just stepped out of the shower. I have a bottle with a few drops left that I have been saving for at least 10 years. It still smells good and I get so many compliments. I wish I could find the person who created the formula of the fragrance. I wonder what the ingredients are. I would attempt to make an organic version of it. For those of you that used to work there, let me know if you are still holding on to some that you want to sell.
Actually what happened was that the principal investor who was a billionaress just lost interest in the midst of an expansion. She could afford to just walk away. No money laundering, no arrests...i understand that the original owner sold out to her because she wanted lots of the products taken out cos they were felt to be too edgy for her more conservative friends...oh well, what a shame. It was an amazing store and the people who started it were the BEST> I knew them briefly around the time they left.
After all this time I still have some Ginger Grapefruit products that you couldn't pay me any amount of $ for! If ANYONE has a resource for Skinmarket please share!
Skinmarket appealed to my 13 year old desires. It was so different in comparison to other makeup places, and it was where I learned how to do my makeup. The sales girls were always so nice. I remember my dad used to take me there, and he used to sit on the couches and paint his fingernails. I got a sugar scrub from them that smelled so good, and whenever I smell anything vaguely similar I always think back to my teen days because of that scrub.
I used to shop at the Skinmarket in Peabody, MA (maybe this is the one that dancinsparkle22 was referring to). I used to go to there all the time. I loved their tuberose fragrance. It came in a small silver vial with a rollerball, but it wasn't called tuberose. They gave all their perfumes funky names. I also loved the purple facial moisturizer, I think it was called Heavenly something-or-other. Then one day I went to the mall and the store was gated, but all the shelves were still filled with merchandise. I was so sad to see that store go.
