Mascara is one of the hardest products to use. Think about it, you can get clumpy lashes, you can blink and get mascara all over your eyelids and undereyes - it can be a royal pain. While many companies have "no clump" formulas and all of these "new and improved" wands, I have a trick to make any mascara with any formula or wand look fantastic.
Let me first start off with the list of mascaras that I use:
1. Dior Show in Black for really intense lashes
2. Stila Multi Effect Mascara for everyday
3. Borjous Blue Mascara for when I need that pop to open my eyes up
4. Lancome Definicils in Brown for when I need Brown Mascara
5. Lancome Cils Booster XL Super Enhancing Mascara Base
I also have small sizes of Tarte Mascara, Lorac Mascara (amazing brush), a few different Lancomes and Two Faced Lash Injection. Once in a while I'll play around with them..and I usually take them when I am going on vacation since they are minis.
I don't always use the lancome base, nor do I always use an eyelash curler. But always curl your eyelashes before you apply mascara.
And now for the rules of applying flawless mascara:
1. Always always always wipe off the brush when you first take it out of the tube. I know this sounds counterproductive, but it prevents having any gloopiness on the end of the brush and it prevents gloopiness on the top of the tube. It also leaves just the right amount of product on the brush.
2. Apply mascara with wand first from under the eyelash upwards toward your eyebrows (you can also smush it around at the base of the lashes just sortof moving it back and forth to get a little bit of a liner/more definition effect, and then diagonally across.
3. To apply mascara to the bottom lashes, smush the mascara back and form across the lashes and then apply diagonally.
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART
4. Take a clean mascara wand, it can be one that you have cleaned and washed from an old tube of mascara, or it can be one that you purchase. I have one that I bought at Sephora. Though if a particular mascara - like the lorac one - has a great brush, I will save the brush once the mascara is finished and just clean it off and use at will. Placing the wand at the bottom of your lashes, comb up towards your eyebrows while spinning the clean brush. Then go back and just spin at the base of your lashline. (This will also create amazing curl). You can then just go over diagonally to pick up any more clumps. Do this on both the upper and lower lashes.
5. Remember to put powder underneath your eyes so that the mascara on your bottom lashes won't run!
6. Wipe off Mascara wand (not the extra clean one) and replace in tube. This will just keep the wand extra clean and it helps prevent any bacterial issues - which will in turn make your mascara stay longer.
7. Clean the extra wand with brush cleanser.
With this method your eyelashes will be curled, separated, full, no clumps, elongated, and beautiful. You will also be able to get every single eyelash - even those hard to reach ones on the inner and outer corners without ruining your makeup.

Thanks for this, I'll try it as soon as I get myself a clean mascara brush!
1Lelli, the easiest route is to nick one of the tester brushes from Sephora. I have them laying all over the house.
2I've never heard of Sephora before.
Maybe they don't have it in the UK or they don't have it in the Trafford Centre. Or I live in a hole.
I'll just wait untill my tester mascaras run out!
3WIping the wand first is a good tip. I haven't needed to do that with the L'Oreal mascara I use now. It always seems like the right amount on the brush.
4I didn't have any success with Lorac's Mascara/wand at all - as some readers might remember from a review I did on the Lorac mascara a bit ago...
Other reviews I have read are equally negative so I think it's very intersting to hear that you've had good luck with it!
I also use a clean mascara brush, it helps so much!
5What do you wipe the wand on, a paper towel? Kleenex and toilet paper have a lot of lint.
6I LOVE dior show mascara in black, it is by far my fav!
7another tip ~ for dramatic lashes, apply a thin brushing of loose powder to lashes in between coats of mascara; it makes them look a lot thicker
color me sticky - i actually do use a tissue and haven't had any lint problems. perhaps its because i very gently roll it over the tissue. after all, you don't want all of the product to come off of the brush!
and as for the lorac mascara (for lily) i don't really love the forumula, but i do like the shape of the brush. i find that the point really helps get into those tiny lashes.
