Usually, when I buy a moisturizer.. I'm not picky. I just look for a non-oily product with SPF. I read recently that I should be using a retinol product. The retinol ingredient is, "the only ingredient that's been consistently proven to improve discoloration, wrinkles, and even pimples over the long term." From what I understand, retinol can make your skin sensitive to UV light, so it wouldn't be replacing my daytime moisturizer.
Do any of you use a retinol product that you love? Or perhaps one of the products the article recommended? (They are below!
)
Boots No.7 Restore & Renew Beauty Serum
RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream
Playtex
I have used the Boots product before and didn't realize it had retinol in it. I do like it, but need to double check the ingredients. I have read good things about the RoC product as well. Check out makeupalley.com for lots of honest reviews.
1Your retinol product shouldn't be considered a moisturizer and definitely a separate product. Retinols are best used at night because of increased photo-sensitivity. Derms prescribe retinols for acne and a lot of people like them and swear by them for wrinkles as well.
I read great things about Alpha Hydrox Retinol ResQ and recently bought it on drugstore.com. Haven't used it much so can't really tell yet- but it was only 13.99 so I thought why not. I have read fantastic things about SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5 and Retinol 1.0. This brand is touted as 2nd to prescription retinols. They are a bit harsh for sensitive skin until you get used to them. I am trying to get on the retinol bandwagon as well, just have to stop being lazy and use the product consistently.
Good luck!
I have a Roc Retinol cream for night. I haven't used it in ages. I probably should re-start it.
2I don't use either of those so I don't know how they work. I would be interested what people have to say about them too.
3I'm interested in this as well. Great info, sofi.
4I use the Boots Renew and Restore, but only at night and after I moisturize.

5See.. so smart!! I didn't realize it was different than a moisturizer..
6glam, shouldn't the Boots go on before you moisturize? Being a serum, it's concentrated with ingredients you want your skin to absorb. Putting it on after a moisturizer really doesn't allow you to benefit as much as possible. I posted this a bit ago, but I thought it was helpful in explaining what to put on first in your beauty regime :

Step eight: moisturizer
Consider the chemistry of creams: "They usually contain more oil than water," Fein says. "So if you were to put them on first, your lighter, water-based gels and serums would slide off your face instead of sinking in." But by applying them almost last, they actually lock in your other products, boosting their efficacy.
7Sofi, that makes sense to do it that way. It seems to be working now but I bet it'll work better changing the order of how I put them on.
I just went and read the back of the tube and that's what it says to do. That'll teach me for not reading directions.

8What's SPF? Don't mind my ignorance.
9LaU- it's stands for sun protection factor. Basically indicates sunscreen in the product- typically in moisturizers. If you are going to use any type of retinol, you have to use a sunscreen or moisturizer + sunscreen because your skin is more sensitive to the sun.
