I have tried TONS of different foundations, and found many that I've liked. Problem is, many foundations don't like me- they aggravate my acne. I have acne scars so I need a foundation that is full-coverage even when I'm not having a breakout. Full-coverage isn't THAT hard to find, but a make-up that will not only give me the coverage I need but will actually stay on my oily skin is darn near impossible. I LOVE bare minerals foundation. I think it looks beautifully and it doesn't cause any breakouts. Only problem is that it doesn't want to stay on my face, my face looks like an oil slick after only an hour of wear. (Please don't tell me about the power of primers, I've tried many and though they do help in creating a smooth appearance, even the mattifying ones do not help with my oil skin). The only foundation I've found that gives me flawless coverage AND stays on is MAC studiofix powder. Its seriously AMAZING. Its pretty much stage make-up but doesn't give me a caked on appearance and lasts for hours. I feel confident in it and think it really helps hide my acne scarring that I'm so ashamed of. One problem- it reaks absolute havoc on my skin! I breakout after wearing it for one night! I'd given it up for awhile and have been using bareminerals but pulled out the ol' studiofix for Halloween and remembered how much in love with it I was. Great for a night, but I am in the midst of a SEVERE, ugly and painful breakout because of my one night affair with it.
Anyone know of a full coverage foundation that will actually stay on but not make me hate my life the next morning?I like wearing a liquid under bareminerals on the very scarred parts that need extra coverage but I think the one I use occasionally is also contributing to my acne.
Suggestions are very welcome
PLEASE. Anything from drugstore to high end.

I have oily skin and am prone to breakouts. I've had great luck with Makeup Forever's HD primer, foundation, concealer, and setting powder. The foundation lasts from about 7:30am-3:00pm without me feeling like I need to do any touchups. MUFE's products don't cause me to break out at all.
If you don't mind me asking, what is your skin care routine? If you're anything like I was, you might be using alcohol, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide to try and combat the oiliness. Essentially what you're doing is drying the crap out of your skin so it's going to start overcompensating by producing more oil. In addition to finding a foundation that works for you, I'd highly recommend working WITH your skin rather than against it - find a skin care routine that isn't going make you work harder with your makeup.
1I still use a benzoyl peroxide treatment (tried to give it up, but when I do I breakout more- I use a DDF one), but I've noticed a huge difference in my skin using cetaphil as a cleanser as opposed to the harsh acne cleansers I was using. I still get tempted to use a harsh cleanser or apply the treatment to my entire face out of frustration (and out of habit, I slathered my face in harsh products as a teen constantly in hopes it would help- before I knew better), but I'm pretty good about moderation now
The only thing I'm still struggling with when it comes to my skin care routine is finding
that perfect moisturizer!
Thank you for the suggestion! I'll have to try the foundation/concealer, I have the hi-def power, the translucent one and LOVE it. It gives me a little more staying power than any other powder to set and it looks great in photos. I've been curious about the entire line, guess I'll brave Sephora with a bare face and try it out!
2I have adult acne problems as well. I use Bare Minerals and Sephora's buildable coverage mineral makeup. I like Sephora's for everyday, but I will say it doesn't last all day. I have to reapply if I'm going out after work... so those days I use Bare Minerals.
The best thing I've found for my skincare routine is Cephacil (sic) face wash. It's drug store. Then I use witch hazel as toner... Clinque's moisturizer (regular not acne)... and Prescriptives' Acne Defense Serum for break outs. It's all about finding a routine that works for you.
Good luck!
3It's Clinque Dramatically Different Moisturizer. I just remember the name.
4I would definitely trying sticking to the foundation + concealer route rather than applying two layers of foundation - your skin just won’t be able to breathe.
I hate acne-specific cleansers! Hate! I was using the Clinique's 3-step acne care solutions routine for years and it nearly destroyed my face! It got to the point where it was dehydrating my skin so the texture and tone was terrible (and had dry patchy spots) while also still heavily producing oil. I was terrified of moisturizers because I thought they would just make me oilier.
Now, I'm using the Clarins line for oily skin (cleanser, toner, moisturizer). There's no alcohol, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide. My skin is LESS oily. I use blotting pads around 2 pm to deal with the small amount of oil on my t-zone. Quite honestly when it comes to skincare, less is more.
The thing with switching up your skin care routine is to give it a few months. When I switched to Clarins, the first two weeks were great, the next few I broke out pretty badly, but now I only find one or two spots when Aunt Flo visits.
Are you removing 100% of your makeup at night? I’m super anal about getting absolutely everything off my face. I use a non-alcohol wipe to deal with my face makeup followed by baby oil to remove my eye makeup. After, I soak a wash cloth in warm water and press it against my face to open my pores to prepare for cleansing. The wash cloth will also remove any of the excess baby oil.
If you want to get super serious about calming your face’s oil production look at your lifestyle. Are you getting enough sleep? Are you drinking enough water? Do you think you’re allergic to any types of foods? Your skin is your biggest organ and it’s a really good indication of internal issues.
5Oh, and I really would reconsider looking at primers. It provides a great layer of protection between your skin and the foundation!
6You might want to alternate between a gentle cleanser and one with gycolic acid (ddf makes one). You might also want to find a good moisturizer. Sometimes break outs and oil come when the skin compensates for the lack of moisture. If you can afford it a few microdermabrasion treatments might help with the scarring. If you do not want or can not afford a trip to the dermatologist, try the new burts bees acne solution - dries up zits fairly quickly. At night clean you skin but not to the point of it feeling tight. I use an oil to clean and it gets everything. Spot treat, and moisturize. Use eye specific products on your eyes.
You might want to look into ROC or Vichy or Kinerase and try their skin care lines.
BE is not really for full coverage you might want to look at liquid base ones from neutrogena or a tinted moisturizer.
7******** Use *DDF* brand *Daily Matte*. You apply it after you wash your face in the morning. Let it soak in abt 2 min or so. Apply whatever foundation you like and you will *not* have the problem anymore. It keeps the sebum from exuding out of your pores while you have foundation on.
You can get it at Sephora.
DDF also has a *Zit Kit*, but you may not need that if you just try the Daily Matte and use it every day. It also has sunblock in it.
8Also, EXFOLIATE, at least once a week. You can purchase exfoliators, or you can just use 1 tsp baking soda and a few drops of water to make a paste. Scrub face in circles and it works as a magnificent exfoliator. (I believe Queen Latifa & a few other celebs do this).
And, drink a LOT of water. Keeping yourself very hydrated does keep your skin looking more healthy. Sounds mommyish but it's true.
9I agree with dixielee.
Try MAC's Volcanic Ash Exfoliator.
10Or Aveda's Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant...
They're both very natural.
I want to say it's not the foundation, but more of a combo of everything together(cleanser+moisturizer+any treatments+primer+foundation).
Wish you luck in finding the right combo!
First thing first, you need a good skincare routine.
Second, use a liquid/mineral foundation for full-coverage is the prefect idea but you need to keep in mind that you have to stick with the "oil-free" formula to let your skin breath through the days or it'll break out and create bacterias on your skin. Water-based and long-lasting is also recommended for what you need. A light wear foundation would complete the trick on not feeling like you have panties on your face.
Now, I recommend you to try MUKE, Dior Nude or Forever, Laura Mercier Oil-Free foundation, Clarins Oil-Free foundation, ...
Good luck!
11First of all, don't be ashamed! Almost everyone gets acne, and unfortunately acne likes to leave its mark. I have very oily skin too, here are a few things that have helped me:
1 Use a body soap, such as dove beauty bar, on your face every night. It will remove a good majority of the oil
2 Always make sure you use a moisturizer that is oil FREE.
3 Ask a professional make-up artist or even your dermatologist to recommend a good foundation/concealer/powder etc.
Also, I know that pro-active now makes makeup products, and those could possibly be very helpful since they are made by a company who makes acne products.
Hope this helps!
12I won't repeat everyone's great advice on skincare so here are my rec's for foundation:
13Chanel is my HG (I love the Vitalumiere but not good for oily gals so I suggest the Mat Lumiere or Pro Lumiere the latter is a heavier coverage)
Revlon Colourstay
Maybelline 24 hr (the new one)
Hope that helped!
I second the DiorSkin Nude recommendation. It is the most amazing foundation I have ever used.
