I've wanted to get a gel eyeliner since Bobbi Brown came out with one, as well as MAC's Fluidline and Stila's Smudgepots. Of course, there are more name brands that came out with gel eyeliners (see below). I really liked the idea of a longwearing (meltproof) liner. But, I was really put off by those prices.
Bobbi Brown's is $19.00
Calvin Klein's "Ultimate Edge Gel" is $16.00
MAC Fluidline's is $15.00
Makeup For Ever's Aqua Creamliner is $20.00
Prescriptive's Perfect Line Every Time is $17.50
Smashbox's Jet Set Waterproof is $22.00
Stila's Smudgepots are $18.00
Anyway, with me wanting to be a "Babe on a Budget", I kept looking. I went to my local Ulta and I went looking for bargains on their Clearance Sale. To my wonder, I saw a little box in the Jane Cosmetics "Mineral Makeup" display (not in the Clearance section).
It was this: "Jane Be Pure Mineral Gel Eyeliner". They had four shades: Black, Brown, Eggplant, a Navy blue. Ulta was selling them for $6 (plus tax). It is such a price break from the gel eyeliners I listed above! I found a jar impossible to resist!
So, I decided to risk the $6 on Dark Brown 01. It came in a sturdy glass jar with silver screw on cap. Also comes with its own eyeliner brush which is surprisingly really nice! It is sturdy, well made, no stray brush hairs going out any place, and applies a nice crisp line in a pretty idiot proof way.
The product is definitely a gel texture, gently pushing the brush into the product picks up a perfect amount of product. The color is indeed a nice rich brown, and was budge proof, doesn’t flake or rub away easily. It also dries pretty fast.
I tried it on today, and put it through "Hazardous Duty", with the nearly 100 degrees and humidity. It lasted all day! No melting! Hurray!
So, for $6, I got a great deal on a mineral gel eyeliner, a highly functional brush and a great product that definitely lives up to its expectations.

awesome!!! Gel eyeliner is my favorite. I have Avon's (In 6 colors! lol)
1nice review- you should post a pic- you know how we love pics
Ulta is having a huge sale now, too
(someone else posted this as well) so I need to check this out. Anything that hold up in hot and humid summers works for me!
2sofi always reminds me how we like pics. I want to see
3Lol- I know! Well, I love my Bobbi Brown and would want to adequately compare the two. I am all for the research!
4Miss Tat- I just noticed your comment above- I wasn't aware of Avon having gel eyeliners. Hmmmm......
5Never tried gel - want to try it!!!
6shopping42don't use gel-instead I use a darker shade of shadow for liner-good buy for you!
7I love my Bobbi Brown and my Fluidline... but I'm always willing to play with more makeup
Will definitely check these out. I remember having Jane stuff back in the day when I was like 11 or 12 - when it was popular the first time!
8That does sound like a great buy.
9omg bailaora you just reminded me of those lipsticks they had, the ones that were flavored! those were my first ever ... they were nice
10Good review! I know the Walgreens by me seems to have Jane stuff at buy 1 get 1 free frequently, too.
11I really like the bobbi brown ones too, never tried jane. I am too lazy to apply them sometimes though and than regular liner comes in handy.
12I've never tried gel.
13As drug store brands go, I love Jane. Their eyeliner pencils are pretty decent too and don't skip. I'll have to try the gel for sure, thanks for the review!
14I love the l'oreal HIP gel liners. I read that the brush was too hard but I think it is jut right. Not to mention that living in the south where it is about 99 degrees outside it didn't budge all day until I took it off with soap and water. Thats not something I can say about HIP eye shadows. They had a buy one get one 50% off at Walgreens and I got the liner and shadow and the liner stayed all day but the eye shadow was gone by the after noon. =( Maybe I will try Jane next time because you can't beat $6.
15This is GREAT info! I use MAC fluid line, and I have to say, that it tends to dry up pretty quick. I never get to "empty" it out. I do use the brush cleaner as well, but it still gets to that semi-dry stage after a while and kind of clumps up. Thanks for this money savvy post! I am going to look for this the next time I need eyeliner.
