Hey guys - everyone on here has been so helpful and awesome anytime I've had a makeup question, so I decided to ask for y'alls opinions on mineral makeup.
Right now, I'm using Everyday Minerals (I previously used BE) and I notice that, while using MMU, I am SUPER oily. Like, Exxon-Valdez oily. Like, "let's set up a rig right on my cheek and we'll end the energy crisis" oily.
When I use MMU, I wash my face, exfoliate and then put on a light moisturizer. I also have started using milk of magnesia (on romaniagrl's fabulous advice!) which does seem to mattify my face at first.
I apply the mineral makeup and literally, within an hour or two, my face is straight up shiny. Like, really bad. I usually use linen paper or paper towel to blot my face and when I do, even after only two hours, the entire paper is covered in oil (although I do get some sort of sick enjoyment out of seeing all that oil blotted off).
Anyways, the weird part is, it's not just my t-zone that's greasy. It's my temples, my cheeks, my jawline, even my eyelids. It's so weird.
Has anyone else had issues when using mineral makeup? Am I just a freak (lol, don't answer that one
)? Is there something I'm doing wrong??

No, I had the same problem. No matter what primer I used, I got really oily.
I finally gave up on MMU. I have the same skincare routine and use the same primer but with my MAC foundation, I don't get nearly as oily. Go figure. And my skin hasn't broken out or had any negative reaction so I don't mind moving away from MMU.
1I don't have any problems with it, but I have a different skin type. Have you tried powder finish creams? They look terrible on dry skin, but it sounds like they'd work pretty well for you.
"end the energy crisis". Well played.
2Hmmm, I do not have that problem and I use BE. I hope
3you can find a makeup that works for you, I know how
frustrating, and expensive getting the right make up
can be!
My skin is pretty normal, not super dry or oily, and I use BE and love it. I only have problems in the winter because it's super cold where I live so I use a tinted moisturizer then.

4I haven't tried mineral makeup yet, but I too have the super duper oily Exxon Valdez could use me oily skin. I'm using three different mattifying products on my skin everyday, and while they're helping, they're not solving the problem.
Were you on BE long enough to figure out if you have the same problem with them?
I've heard good things about liquid foundations like Almay and Neutrogena, but I think (only think mind you) that people with shiny oily skin should steer clear of powder foundations because they can streak on your face a little while after you put them on.
5ive heard of people breaking out and having their skin become oily when using some mineral products. my guess would be that one of the minerals is not reacting well with your skin. i myself use bare escentuals, and have never had any problems with it.
if you want to try a mineral powder to mattify your face, try tarte's powder. that stuff is magic. i gave it to one of my friend's to try when she was pregnant and her hormones were making her shine like crazy. she ended up buying it as well as the mineral bronzer.
i also like that that tarte powder/bronzer are not loose - so its much neater than other mineral makeup.
also, the beauty brains (a website dedicated to the science of beauty) are about to do a whole section on mineral makeup -- so perhaps they can help enlighten you as to WHY this is happening, and which minerals to stay away from. check them out at beautybrains.com.
good luck!!!
6Huh. That's bizarre - I mean, I'm oily, but that sounds beyond normal amounts of oil, especially if it's only happening with MMU. I suggest going off it for a few weeks and seeing if there's an improvement. I'm assuming you didn't have this problem with BE, so it might just be something about MMU. You have my sympathy - good luck with solving this problem!
7So sorry that the MMU and MoM didn't work for you! I hope you find something that works..

I really hoped the MOM would be helpful to you. Have you always been this oily? I tend to get
more oily during hormonal times or in the summer. Could your body be going through some changes? Baila seems to be an expert on oily, so I don't have much to add. My last suggestion would be
to see a dermatologist and see if there's a clinical treatment for this.
9I recommend Jane Iredale pure pressed base - its 100% minerals with a matte finish. I find loose mineral powders too shiny as a general rule but this stuff is pretty good. It cleared up my breakouts too although it's a little on the pricey side... Good luck
10I use BE and by mid day I'm completely oily. I also use blotting papers to reduce the oil. I've always heard that less is more with BE so I thought that I was putting on too much, so I started to use a little less, and I noticed a slight change, but not much. I'm thinking of making a switch again but I don't know which way to go. It's very frustrating to find a foundation that works well with oily skin, before BE I used Clinique foundation and that wasn't much better! And I totally understand your eyelids being oily, because most of the time my brow bones are one of my most oily spots! Weird!!
11I was thinking... A very important thing about makeup and keeping your face looking clear is cleaning your brushes! If I don't clean my brushes every week.. my face will start to look oily and I'll start to break out. Something to keep in mind.
12I have the same problem. I use a primer from Estee Lauder on my lids and it actually works and keeps my eyeliner and eyeshadow on all day. I put it on then add a little BE Mineral Veil, it's a miracle because my eye makeup used to slide right off because of the oil. For my face I use Clinique Pore Reduction Instant Perfector as a primer for my T-zone then add BE Mineral Veil then the BE Foundation. Then one more coat of BE Mineral Veil (after blush) to set everything. I also stock up on oil blotting papers, Clean and Clear make a good one. If I do all these steps, I can hold back the oil for a good three hours (for me that's long!) I've recently tried Maybelline's version of Mineral Makeup and was oily before I could even finish my makeup! Huge disappointment. I hope this helps a bit!
13I keep thinking of new things.. As scully said before, she uses the mineral veil first. It is recommended on BE's site to use the Featherlite Mineral Veil before the foundation if you have oily skin. I've done it a couple of times and works well on my t-zone.
14Wow, guys! Thanks for all the input - you guys have a lot of helpful info
Before using BE and Everyday Minerals mineral powder foundation, I wasn't really very oily. Average at most. I do clean my brushes (usually weekly) so I don't think that's the culprit.
Baila - it really is beyond-normal oiliness, but if anything, my diet has improved and I don't think I'm going hormonal or anything...Haha, but I'm glad to know that I've got the "oily" expert giving me suggestions, I feel like I'm very good hands!
I think I'm switching back to liquid foundation (my regular old Neutrogena) for good now because I really think the mineral makeup is the cause - I wore liquid foundation with Milk of Magnesia underneath today and I didn't have to blot all day, so go figure. Two days ago, I wore Everyday Minerals with Milk of Magnesia underneath and it was a grease fest.
htiduj - I think you're right, something about powdered mineral makeup just does not make my face happy. Since I don't want to get on my face's nerves (because that usually results in it throwing a fit and getting greasy and pimply, haha
) I think I'm
going to try liquid foundation.
Out of curiosity - can anyone recommend a good organic or vegan liquid foundation?
Seriously, you guys are the BEST!
15I've never tried organic or vegan foundation. If you do find a good one, please share!
16I have been interested in this brand called Suki but I don't know if it's vegan or organic. It is all natural and kind of pricey and they sell it at herbal stores. You can find it online:

I spoke to a couple different people at Sephora and they informed me that there are some ingredients in MMU that cause some skin types to get oily and others to get the appearance of larger pours (weird, I know).
18If you really like the idea of mineral makeup then I would try a different line. Urban Decay's is quite good.
Hey there,
You could try to use a different kind of powder foundation & see if that works for you. Your skin is probably not too compatible with the format of this makeup. What does your skin normally feel like right after washing it? Are you usually oily? or normal and this makeup makes you even more oily?
Try to use a translucent powder concentratin the application on the areas where you do get oilier to set your makeup. If you like mineral makeup you could try Mineral Veil by Bare Escentuals, or one of my favourites, Make Up For Ever, Loose All Mat powder ( I find it worked wonders for me).Another product that is supposed to mattify for all over and works as a makeup primer is Cargo's liquid loose powder which has some silicone in it & you just squeeze a drop out and apply it all over the face.
Hopefully you find something that works!

19htiduj: I just discovered thebeautybrains.com on my own. I came back here to see what others meant when they were discussing mineral makeup. I wish I had looked there before. It's a great site, ladies.
