This morning I woke up thinking about how much discipline a proper beauty regimen takes. Just the simple task of washing ones face before bed takes discipline. Especially if its really late at night and you are really really tired. But for some of us junkies, it goes way beyond that.
The washing, toning, exfoliating, various serums/creams/moisturizing, not to mention the edition of weekly or bimonthly masks AND using SPF everyday AND putting on makeup everyday can be really exhausting! Especially when you go through the ritual two times a day. Not to mention the switching of shampoos, the conditioning treatments, using products to style your hair...the filing of the nails, moisturizing your entire body...which for me includes using firming creams, moisturizer, and body oil.....it can become exhausting.
It really takes dedication, like sticking to a diet or exercise program. I have no issues with exercising -- I don't go to a gym, but I do Yoga 2X a day and walk a lot, but sticking to a diet?! Yeah, thats funny. And yet, when it comes to Beauty, Haircare, Nailcare, and Skincare I have the dedication. Sure, I get the beauty blahs, but I am really dilligent about it.
I was thinking about what drives me to take such measures, and I realised the following:
1. I was started on the clinque 3 step system (which I've since graduated from) when I was very young
2. My skin is extremely sensitive
3. I burn easily and am afraid of skin cancer
4. Using the products and doing my "spa at home" things are very soothing to me. I really enjoy the ritual
5. I'm a little bit vain
6. It soothes me and makes me feel happy
7. The results are fabulous, and don't take too long to show
It seems that those 7 things drive me to stick to the regimen..but what drives you?
Morgan
Missoni
Bottega Veneta
I hate getting break outs! That drives me to keep up the routine.
1I've had skin cancer so SPF is a daily priority.
My mom taught me that it's really important to take care of your skin.
I'm vain and always want to look my best.
I like the feeling of fresh, clean skin, especially at night. I never go to bed without washing my face.

2Great post, and good questions.
Basically, I spend a lot of time with my skin/makeup/hair because of a few reasons:
1. Do not want skin cancer.
32. Do not want to look prematurely old.
3. Do not want pimples.
4. Feel more confident when skin is healthy.
5. Feel happier when I treat myself to a little spa ritual at home.
6. Because I'm very pale, I look healthier with a little blush on my cheeks.
My reasons are very similar to yours:
1. I am vain, or you could just look at it as I care about my appearance.
2. If I don't wash my face at night and take care of my skin in general I breakout.
3. I use sunscreen and don't really sit in the sun (except on vacation) because I don't want wrinkles. Cancer is not a huge concern for me because I have olive skin that burns only when I go close to the Equator.
4. It feels good to pamper myself or be pampered by someone else on occasion.
Fun post, thanks!
4Oh, and I love the fresh clean feeling after. Last night I removed my makeup and washed up at 8 pm instead of right before bed, and I loved the feeling. My face felt so good! I should try to do that more often.
5Simply, I want my skin to look it's best. In junior high I had terrible acne, and it's since let up tremendously because I wash my face every night and morning. I rarely ever get acne, unless I'm PMSing. I can't stand it.
I like my skin to feel soft. Someone once told me my skin looks like porcelain. It might've been the best compliment I've ever gotten. I strive for that in my skin.
I never go tanning and I always use sun tan lotion if I'm out in the sun. I do not want skin cancer.
61. I'm vain

72. I get breakouts all the time and I want them to GO AWAY!
3. It makes me feel "fresh" and more confident
4. It's fun!
I agree with Bella's reasons - they're pretty much exactly what I would say. I didn't always take good care of my skin when I was younger and I don't want to pay the price lately!
And it's just fun to look pretty.
8I do consider putting on makeup kind of a necessary recreational activity. It's fun!

9First off, it is not vain to care about your skin and skin care. I have been wearing sunscreen since 12 and I am between a honey/carmel complexion. I believe in washing your skin like your body. I use Philosophy Make-up Optional Skincare line for the last six months and I use Oil Olay for UVA/UVB, SPF 15 (winter) or SPF 30 (summer). It's good to have good hygine.
101. I am an anti-aging enthusiast
2. I care about what I look like, not only for others, but for myself
3. My mom taught me early on about taking good care of your body (I used the Clinique system when I was younger too!)
4. I feel better once I have soothed my skin
5. I love to hear my husband say "you look great, hon" (he's into anti-aging as well - he's actually taught me a lot.)
I agree...great post!
11I'm not vain...I guess I'm just annoyed when things aren't perfect
12I think we all have similar reasons for sticking to our skincare routines even though it is a chore.
131. to maintain healthy skin
2. prevent nasty break outs
3. hygiene purposes!! got to clean off all the dust and dirt which accumulates on our skin in the day.
4. after buying all that products, we got to put them to good use right??
1. I am vain, I care about how I look.
142. I don't want to look old at my young age.
3. No breakouts!
4. I feel "so fresh, so clean".
5. When I do get older, I want to age gracefully.
With Love,
MaRy!
