So, every day I get on the bus at the same time. (I am boring.) And then, every day, this girl gets on about four stops after me. Every single day, she sits down, opens her bag, and proceeds to put on her makeup. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Bella, don't be a jerky turd. Everybody touches up now and then."
Except this girl does not touch up. It is as though the bus is her own personal moving powder room.
This is her routine:
1. Applies Caudalie lotion.
2. Applies eye cream.
3. Applies tinted moisturizer.
4. Applies concealer.
5. Applies another kind of concealer.
6. Applies powder with puff.
7. Applies Benefit That Gal
8. Draws on eyebrows with pencil.
9. Applies two or three shades of eye shadow.
10. Eyeliner time.
10. Mascara time (this takes a long time. Many coats.)
11. Lip liner.
12. Lipstick
13. Lip gloss.
This is as far as I get, because after about 20 minutes, I have to get off the bus, while she stays aboard.
Look, I'm sure she's a very nice girl! Very nice! Yet I cannot stop staring at her when she does this routine. For a long time, I would slap myself on the wrist and say, "Leave it alone, Bella. You are being weird and judgmental and you are turning into your mother." But today, this poor little old man (in a Keith Sweat hat, which was awesome) came on the bus, all 80-something years of him kinda swaying with every step, and he looked around for a seat. All of the seats at the front of the bus were filled. Makeup Applier, who is young and seemingly able-bodied, did not give her seat up for Elderly Keith Sweat. So now I feel slightly less awful for silently judging.
Anyway, am I nuts? Or would this drive you crazy as well? Am I alone in wanting to say, "Wake up 10 minutes earlier!"?

Did you give him your seat?
1And yeah, it's a little weird to put on a full face of makeup in public. I'd be embarrassed.
2I had already given my seat to another older person
3When I was taking the Muni/BART,etc. I saw Many things.. This does not surprise me at all! It would drive me crazy to see the same *thing* everyday.. but I'd get enjoyment out of watching the other people on the bus.. maybe you could catch the earlier bus? (And no, you're not nuts)
4First you should congratulate her on her handling skills. Putting on makeup specially things involving pencils, in a moving vehicle is not easy. Then you should tell her to wakeup earlier so that nobody has to see her put her makeup on day in and day out. I feel for the person that sits next to her.
There is a retirement home in my neighborhood so there are a lot of elderly people on the bus. For the most part people are really good about giving them their seat. Every once in awhile some jackass wont get up so the elderly will tap them with their cane and tell them to move
The
elderly are sassy and you do not want to mess with them
5LOL Jessness. I love feisty old folks. I plan to be that kind of old lady someday.
On the other hand, I was so impressed when this young gent, maybe 19 or 20, offered me his seat a few weeks ago — particularly because his arm was in a cast. I thanked him but turned down the offer, but it was such a gallant thing to do, you know? Either that, or I look older than I thought! ha ha ha.
6I was on the bus once and there were no seats so I just stood which I have absolutely no problem with. This scary gangster looking guy got up and offered me his seat....so nice
7Wow! That would drive me nuts. Of course, I wouldn't even bother leaving my house without my daily beauty routine.
But that girl could totally get up 10 minutes earlier.

8I'm almost embarrassed when I apply lipstick in my rearview mirror while driving, always looking to my left and right to see if anyone is watching~ let alone put on my entire face on a BUS!! She must really enjoy her beauty sleep.
9Bella, I have a lady who gets on the bus every morning and does the same thing, but her make-up is cheap and the colors are awful. I just stare because I am at awe, I try not to but I am amazed at the 80s colors that she sport.
10i won't do the whole face on a bus or a cab.. i sometimes do a quite fix or touch up, but i enjoy the process of doing my make up and i dun like to rush it or have the whole world watching me while i do my face.
11Bellaressa, maybe we should introduce our makeup-applying buddies. Ah, public transit.
I'm with retail_therapy... I don't like to rush it. I look like Crazyface McGee when I rush it.
12Bella and ladies, sometimes my lady looks like a clown. It's like 1989 all over again.
13That would have driven me crazy too!
I used to bus every morning - and without fail, there was this one TAB who inevitably would do ALL her eye makeup. Every day.
However, she ended up sticking herself in the eye with her eyeliner on a icy day when the bus came to a jerky, swerve-y stop, and never did it again.
Hats off to you for giving up your seat!
14Maybe she is not supposed to be wearing make up so she
15sneaks it onto the bus? I would stare too.
I use to watch in a amazement all the girls in high school who were not allowed to wear makeup so they would take over the bathrooms on campus applying as much blue eyeshadow and frosted lip gloss as they could
Im happy that my bad makeup phase was just wearing too much black eyeliner
16I dunno-it's a time saver. Her routine sounds rather excessive, but in principle, I don't think it's a big deal to apply make-up on public transportation.
However, I would stare. And be annoyed.
17The reason a person should not apply make-up while driving is because it's potentially dangerous.
18I think the real sticker is that she does it every single day. Lord knows we've all had rushed days where we have to either forgo makeup altogether or apply it at work (or I have anyway), but every single day? I'm not sure I could handle it.
I walk everywhere I go, and I like to leave the house looking and feeling put together- even if I'm going to sweat it all off on the walk to school.
19i cannot judge at all. i totally end up taking my makeup bag to work with me everyday because i am so tired and lazy in the morning and now with me going in even earlier (6am) i don't see me getting any better. i apply it in my cubicle at my desk and not on a bus where everyone is in close proximity can watch me to do it. so moral of the story is laziness and not being a morning person wins out for me at least 2-3 days of the work week.
just being honest.
20mmm that is kinda awesome, that she does all that in a bus.
First I would make a round of applause...
but... yuk... do all that in a bus. I mean, maybe, MAYBE I would apply the moisturizer and powder, maybe mascara... but.. all that!? when I don't have time to "make-up" myself, I only apply moisturizer and powder... and run, Nadia, run.
Maybe, in my desk, later, I apply mascara, blush and lip gloss.

21== ka me ha me HA ==
I would stare, and judge for sure. I enjoy my morning makeup ritual. I would be afraid I'd drop something on the floor and it would roll down the aisle. I can't imagine putting on my makeup in front of strangers. How odd!!! I agree with Liltandweave - if it were every once in a while - you would think - "ahh she woke up late today, that sucks" - but everyday - jesus h lady!
22This post had me laughing out loud. I'm the same way--get on the bus at the same time (and, uh, yes, I've made friends with people on my bus/train route too...don't laugh! I met a boyfriend on my bus and a cute guy friend I just started talking to a few months ago!) and I see this one woman on my train who literally does the same thing. She even curls her eyelashes on the train. Unbelivable! I'd be so afraid of the train jerking forward and ripping my eyelashes out!
My cosmetic-addled train rider starts with moisturizer, then eye cream, then concealer, then some Cover Girl foundation, the eyelash curling, then eyeshadow, then mascara, then some Stila convertible color, then some lip gloss, and finally some pressed powder. I applaud her skills but could not imagine schlepping all of that stuff around. It drives me nuts and I also feel bad if she sits next to someone because she's kind of all elbows when she does it. I try to take up as little space as possible on my train or bus out of consideration, and it just seems rude to me. I hate it when someone gets all up in my personal space--but eh, it's public transportation! The most I can hope for is a seat and an unpleasant scent-free environment!
Also--regarding people giving up seats--I can't tell you how often people *don't* give up seats. I was standing on a crammed train and a very visibly pregnant woman got on, and no one offered her a seat! She had to wait for someone to get off. Craziness...
23The bus is public transportation, not a moving powder room
24Wow. I can barely get my hands steady enough to apply pressed powder in the mornings.
Respect.
25Uh, I even have a hard time keeping a steady hand while putting on eyeliner in my bathroom..what more on a bus?? O_O haha
Oh well, good for her that she could do all that. ^__^ It seems improper though to put all those while riding public transpo. I think she needs to review her social etiquette.. >_<</p> 26
wow, she must have very good balancing skills to do her make up on the BUS. is she pretty? cos if she is, then i dont mind watching her put on her make-up, but if she's ugly, then i would just go up and slap her. HAHA!
27I don't know, I mean I personally would never ever apply a full face of makeup on public transportation, but it's harsh to judge someone because you don't know their situation. Yes, it's easy to say "get up 10 minutes earlier" but we don't know what her life entails -- maybe she has an elderly parent that she cares for each morning, or she has some hobby or sport for which she has to train every morning at 4am. People are so quick to judge without knowing the extent of the situation. Unless she's accidentally poking you in the face with her eyeliner pencil every time the bus jolts, or spraying giant clouds of perfume, I really don't see the big problem.
28If she's "drawing" on her eyebrows, I say judge away.
29I got so hung up laughing at "jerky turd" that I had to reread the post to laugh at crazy makeup lady. Germs! In your makeup! Gross!
30em1282, maybe we are long-lost transit twins, both sentenced to watch people apply their "face" every day. I took the advice above and took the earlier bus today. It was great.
31woah. that is kinda ridiculous. while I agree it is a time saver, I feel like it's kinda gross. I always wash my hands before applying my "face" in the am, and this just doesn't seem sanitary.
I would totally be that person that would just stare the entire time, fuming. the train makes me a crazy person!
and boo on her for not helping out Elderly Keith Sweat!
32She does her make up on the buss EVERY MORNING??? That must be awfully bumpy! I mean it's okay to "freshen up" a bit but the whole make up routine on there  I don't blame you for going nuts Bella!
BTW In London, I saw a girl doing almost the same thing in the tube! She was so into the whole make up thing that she didn't notice any of the other passengers. Maybe that was for her own good though, because they (me included) were all staring at her like she was crazy!
33That would so bother me! There are certain things that you just do at home and your daily routine should be one of them. To me she may as well be brushing her teeth on the bus.
As bad as it is I'm used to seeing young people not give up seats for those who could use them. In my area no one pays attention to anyone around them and actively do what they can to ignore others. That part seems to be the awful norm these days.
34I'm not sure what people would judge her for. Putting on her face every morning on public transportation certainly invites people to stare, but what kind of judgments are made? That she's too lazy to get up earlier? Maybe she has another job that gets her in late at night, or family members to attend to in the morning, or maybe she just values an extra 15 minutes of sleep and decides that instead of sitting and staring at other people on her way to work, that she might use it to do something that'll allow her to press snooze a couple extra times. Honestly, who cares?
What I'm interested in is what is it about her attitude or outfit that might bother you? Is she snobby and doesn't acknowledge other people? Is her clothing skanky and screaming for attention? Is there something else about her that doesn't quite vibe well with you, because usually our instincts are triggered by valid reasons. It sounds like you had negative vibes from her even before you saw that she didn't give up her seat for the elderly man.
35I think its really wierd of her to do that. Why not put on deodorant on the bus or something like that?
36I used to apply my makeup on the bus too. Until one day when the bus jerked (London bus drivers are very erratic) and the glass pot of Ruby & Millie multipurpose cream that I was holding shot out of my hand and splattered the entire aisle with shimmery bronze stuff! Aside from my sheer morfication when everyone turned to look at me as I scrabbled around trying to wipe it up, I was really annoyed as it was limited edition and I loved it. Needless to say I haven't applied my makeup on the bus since!
37Wow Missy, was that your regular bus? That is defin. embarrassing. I saw the lady again, applying her make-up and I am amazed at how steady her hand is. The bus flies down Lake Shore Drive and she is just blending away. Despite the 80s color she has technique. I just cringe when I see the dark violet with brown. Not flattering with thick black eyeliner.
38Bella, yeah that's a little weird - my mom always taught me that it's not appropriate to apply makeup in public. Then again, maybe she lives in a really small apartment (I live in an efficiency, which is basically one room with a tiny little alcove for a toilet and a showerstall - no sink) so maybe it's difficult for her to apply makeup at home? Maybe she's just really bad at getting up on time and she has to apply her makeup so she's not late. I hate to judge people if I don't know the backstory (and there very well could be one in this situation).
It's a little snotty that she didn't give up her seat, but in my mind, I wonder - why didn't anyone else? She was obviously doing something (whether or not applying makeup on a bus is acceptable or not) which makes it a little bit understandable why she didn't get up. If the bus was full, there were plenty of other people who could have given their seats up - so it's not 100% fair that she would have to, or should be looked down upon for not doing so.
I don't know - I'm not trying to necessarily make excuses for her, but she IS a stranger that you only see on the bus, so we don't really know what's truly going on.
39But seriously, props to her skills - the buses where I live are kind of crazy ("swerve all over the place, jam on the brakes at a moment's notice" kind of crazy) and there's no way I could do that.
40I'm with the majority here...a people watcher. My husband is a public transit rider and he has bus stories that singe eyebrows! There's the one about the guy who vomited all over him, and the one about the guy who started a fight on the bus and wouldn't get off after he urinated on himself. I guess to me after his stories the make-up isn't so bad (I'd never do it either - thats sacrosanct) but it does bug me that she wouldn't offer her seat to Keith Sweat dude. I really can't stand it when our older generation isn't respected. Its the little things that tell where we are as a people I think...
41Red, I have no problem that she applies on the bus just the colors. I know that is horrible but the combo is really bad for her.
42Pure-perfection : Boo, that's not very nice at all! And besides, there shouldn't be any double-standards.
If putting on your face in public is tacky, it should be tacky across the board (that goes for any dudes applying guy-liner as well!)
43Bellaressa - haha, sorry, my reply was more to BellaSugar. Man, I think that name of yours is going to give you a trial! No, I totally agree - seeing the overdone 80's makeup on is like seing a car wreck. It's awful but you just can't pull your eyes away from the disaster! It's a shame too, because the majority of women I see with that makeup on look like they have really great skin underneath and if they just toned it down, they would be HOT!
44This would drive me crazy too.. in fact it has. At my school, there's a sorority notoriously known for piling on the makeup. Every morning after my 10am class, I would see this girl in the bathroom reapplying gobs and gobs of makeup on her already made up face. I just wanted to scream STOP! You're already wearing too much to begin with! And for goodness sakes, just pile it all on at once in the morning! Ugh.
45I used to do this about 6 years ago. I had a 50 minute train ride to work and I got on at the start of the line with only about 3 people in the entire car. I would sit all the way in the back and do my makeup (not moisturizer, though). I thought why not make the best use of my time? I was on there every day for almost an hour and it saved me 10 minutes in the morning. I had to finish by the third stop though because more people started to get on.
46yes bellaressa it was my regular no. 14 bus! I was so mortified that I took the tube for the whole next week even though I HATE the icky, sweaty tube! Luckily I moved house shortly after that so I never had to face the accusing stares of the no other regulars who may have got splattered with my warpaint!
47I would definitely find it hard not to stare, but i have to give the girl props for being able to do all that in a moving vehicle. I have a hard enough time getting it right standing in a stationary position in front of a mirror!
48I am never ashamed of putting on make up in public..not when i do not know them, the only time i cared was when i was in class with a cute boy or in the same area..thats the only time when i am shy about it. but if a really need it i still do it..
did you ever think that maybe she has a routine at home, or it could be something bizzarr like she has no lights(yea thats not going to be but im just saying) It is not affecting you, she is not in your way, maybeshe just simply chooses to have fresh makeup when she arrives at her destination.
but if your really that obsessed about it, when you get on that bus, stay on and see where she gets off..see what she does each day that she needs to do her make up than. I am up busy at all hours of the night so when I have an early morning..i do my make up in the car.
49and i should add, i am not trying to be rude. you just should not be so concerned with her routine, just your own. and that cant possibly be the worst thing you've ever seen on a bus.
